On Vijayadashami, married women traditionally offer sindoor to Maa Durga and then apply vermilion to one another. The ritual takes place before the farewell and immersion, turning the pandal red just as the Puja is drawing to a close.
Why is Dashami emotional?
In the Bengali imagination, Maa Durga comes home with her children for a few days and returns to Kailash after Dashami. That is why celebration and sadness sit side by side. We exchange Bijoya greetings, seek blessings from elders, hug friends and family and start saying the familiar words that make the farewell easier: Asche bochor abar hobe. Next year, we will do it again.
