Sandhi Puja is observed at the junction of Ashtami and Navami. Traditionally the sandhi lasts 48 minutes: the final 24 minutes of Ashtami and the first 24 minutes of Navami. The ritual is associated with Maa Durga's fierce Chamunda form and the defeat of Chanda and Munda.
Why 108 lamps and lotuses?
A widely followed tradition during Sandhi Puja is the offering of 108 lamps and 108 lotuses. The exact ritual practice can vary between communities, but the central idea remains the same: this is the moment connecting two important tithis and is observed with particular devotion.
If this is your first Durga Puja
You do not have to know every mantra or ritual beforehand. Come, watch respectfully and ask us questions. One of the reasons we are building these BSS Puja stories is so that friends from outside the Bengali and Sylheti communities can understand what they are seeing rather than feeling like outsiders.
